To alleviate the dog and cat overpopulation problem.
According to animal welfare reports, over 1 million dogs and cats are euthanized in South Africa each year, simply because they are unwanted and shelters across the country are overburdened. The more pets spayed or neutered, the fewer dogs and cats will have to be destroyed.
Spayed and neutered pets live longer, healthier lives.
Spaying female pets reduces the risk of uterine and ovarian cancer, and reproductive diseases such as TVT (Transmissible Venereal Tumor). Neutering male pets reduces the risk of prostate cancer.
An altered dog or cat is a better pet for your family.
Neutered pets are less likely to roam and fight. Spaying female pets reduces their desire to roam, and neutering male pets reduces undesirable sexual behaviours like mounting and marking. Spaying female pets eliminates heat cycles, so males will not be attracted and neutering also decreases hormones that can contribute to aggressive behaviour.
No family wants to cope with an unwanted pregnancy.
Spaying prevents your pet from giving birth to unwanted puppies or kittens.
Reduces the risk of disease.
In many communities, pet owners struggle financially to sterilise their animals. This leads to uncontrolled breeding and the spread of diseases such as scabies, rabies, hookworm, tapeworm, and toxoplasmosis.
Since 2008, the NSP has facilitated over 120,000 sterilisations nationwide - directly reducing animal suffering and shelter overcrowding.
Whether it’s a small donation, spreading awareness, or volunteering your time - every effort counts. Help us continue this vital work for South Africa’s animals.
